The exotic Iroko provides an ideal exterior decking material once it has gone through the thermo treatment giving it improved stability and durability. Its light amber colour and an elegant look captures perfection with its modern aspect.
Iroko is a large hardwood tree from the west coast of tropical Africa. It is one of the woods sometimes referred to as African Teak, although it is unrelated to the teak family. Iroko is very durable, and is resistant to both rot and insect attack.
Iroko is a strong, very durable timber and has a very attractive appearance. Suitable for many purposes for which teak is used, including exterior and interior joinery, bench tops and draining boards. Also used in boat building and vehicle building industry.
What is ThermoWood?
ThermoWood is a thermal modification procedure that preserves wood in its most natural and flawless state for a life-long journey. The “ThermoWood method” involves a carefully computer controlled heat and steam process up to 210 degrees C.
Besides the preservation, the ThermoWood process also causes certain chemical changes in wood. Not only does the colour darken but the stability, decay resistance and insulation properties are largely increased after the process is complete.
The ThermoWood method, brand and logo can only by the used by members of the International ThermoWood Association.
Iroko has yellow tones throughout the board however overtime the boards darken to a richer honey brown colour. With all stable timbers you can use different coloured timbers to create patterns and highlight specific areas like deck perimeters, steps, ramps and changes in levels. You do not need to restrict yourself to one type of timber for the entire project whether it’s decking, cladding, flooring or decorative panelling.
Samples vary in colour so we recommend that you visit a display or show area where you can really get an understanding of what the boards will look and feel like. QTD have their very own unique show areas, why not come and visit us!
Fixing and Finishing Methods
This is only available with the Zeta Clip cladding profile. The hidden clip system allows you to display your cladding boards with no visual sight of screws in the boards.
Simply screw through the face of the board into the sub-frame, you can then purchase plug caps to go over each hole to create a perfect finish.
This will be created with which ever profile you choose to go with.
We recommend 400mm centre to centre joist spacing for a standard area, projects may vary.
End Grain Sealer:
When the timber starts to dry out it loses the moisture quicker through the ends of the timber hence the characteristics of grain checking and opening up. Clear wax sealer seals the timber ends and slows down the moisture loss to a more controlled process, thus preventing this cracking. This is especially useful because cutting off the damaged ends not only becomes an expensive waste of timber, but may mean the difference between having the right length of timber for your project or it being several centimetres too short.
We recommend using our Messmers End Grain Wax Sealer to prevent the boards from grain checking.
Oiling the boards will help you to retain the dark rich colours within the boards. This product contains UV filters to delay the silvering process that strong sunlight causes in all timbers. We can now provide you with two options when it comes to oiling your boards, you can purchase our Messmers UV Plus Oil or you can order your boards pre-oiled saving you the initial labour cost of applying it yourself. If after a year you wish to maintain your investment we can supply the Clean & Oil starter Pack for you to use when convenient.
It costs £5.20/square metre to have the boards Pre-oiled, please let us know if you would like this option.
