Ash Hardwood is an essential material in woodcraft, due to its amazing durability. Ash is a hardwood with a high number of growth rings, and features an aesthetic look with its wavy grain structure, beautiful brown colour and its strength.
Woodworkers generally like the timber for its great finishing qualities. It also has good machining qualities, and is quite easy to use with screws and glue. The Ash timber used in ThermoWood production is sourced from North America due to it’s dense grain structure unlike the open grain structure of European Ash.

What is ThermoWood?
ThermoWood is a thermal modification procedure that preserves wood in its most natural and flawless state for a life-long journey. The “ThermoWood method” involves a carefully computer controlled heat and steam process up to 210 degrees C.
Besides the preservation, the ThermoWood process also causes certain chemical changes in wood. Not only does the color darken but the stability, decay resistance and insulation properties are largely increased after the process is complete.
The ThermoWood method, brand, and logo can only by the used by members of the International ThermoWood Association.
Fixing and Finishing Methods
Fasteners: Use thin stainless steel staples. Fasteners should penetrate at least 2/3 into the batten.
Ventilation: It is important to ensure adequate air circulation underneath the shingles in order to enhance their durability, drainage and energy efficiency.
1. Always begin installation from the bottom and work your way up.
2. In order to calculate the number of shingle courses to be installed:
a. measure the surface area you want to cover and divide it by the desired exposure;
b. adjust the exposure to even the courses.
3. Draw a horizontal line or use a board to align the shingles correctly.
4. For the first course, lay a double layer of shingles and offset them so the joints do not align. The bottom course should extend max ½ from the top course.
5. Use staple gun to attach the shingles to the joints.
6. Leave a 1.5-3 mm gap between adjacent shingles so the wood has room to expand. The gap size is depending on the location of the installation – for very dry
areas no more than 1.5 mm is required.
7. Always offset the joints of successive shingle courses. The same applies to shingle imperfections and wood defects, which should not be positioned under the joints.
8. Never allow joints of any three consecutive courses to line up.
End Grain Sealer:
When the timber starts to dry out it loses the moisture quicker through the ends of the timber hence the characteristics of grain checking and opening up. Clear wax sealer seals the timber ends and slows down the moisture loss to a more controlled process, thus preventing this cracking. This is especially useful because cutting off the damaged ends not only becomes an expensive waste of timber, but may mean the difference between having the right length of timber for your project or it being several centimetres too short.
We recommend using our Messmers End Grain Wax Sealer to prevent the boards from grain checking.
Oiling the boards will help you to retain the dark rich colours within the boards. This product contains UV filters to delay the silvering process that strong sunlight causes in all timbers. We can now provide you with two options when it comes to oiling your boards, you can purchase our Messmers UV Plus Oil or you can order your boards pre-oiled saving you the initial labour cost of applying it yourself. If after a year you wish to maintain your investment we can supply the Clean & Oil starter Pack for you to use when convenient.
