The Wood Awards 2012. Showcases the design potential of Thermally modified hardwoods.

The Bench is made out of 5 different U.S Hardwood species of thermally modified Red Oak, Maple, Ash, Yellow Birch and Tulipwood. The Thermal modification process uses high temperatures in a controlled environment to permanently alter the wood’s chemical and physical properties, significantly increasing decay resistance and stability.

‘These projects and others like it help to deliver important messages to the design community’, says European director David Venables. ‘By showcasing real sustainability through LCA and new technologies to enhance durability we have shone a light on what is now possible, which we believe will ultimately lead the ways of designing creatively and sustainably with hardwood’.

There’s a developing market for thermally modified hardwoods in the UK, led by the growth in demand in Europe and it’s great to be able to showcase their potential at the London Design Festival this year.
